I clearly remember the moment I realized I needed something different from my professional life. I was in the operating room, preparing my fourth propofol syringe of the day, and thought, there has to be more to being a doctor than this. Initially, I was captivated by the delicate interplay between anesthetics and physiology, which led me to anesthesiology.
As a young doctor, I didn't fully appreciate that working with human physiology would feel routine and predictable. I found myself increasingly curious about the lives of the patients I only saw briefly, wondering about their stories and experiences.
After four years as an anesthesia trainee and five more as an attending, I knew I wanted to explore a field that allowed for deeper reflection and creative thinking. I returned to NYU, the place where I trained in anesthesia, but this time my courses and clinical work focused on thought and introspection. This new path has enabled me to connect with people, the world, and our culture in a more nuanced and fulfilling way.
